Railcar Aln 556 FS

The diesel railcar Aln 556, manufactured by Breda in Milan from 1938 to 1940, it differed from the previously mentioned  ALn 56 for the presence of remote controls for single driver operation or multiple powered units. From 1948, they underwent  refurbishment and some modifications, with the replacement of the two diesel engines and the installation of  radiators on the sides of the unit. The Aln 556 have served on almost all lines of electrified railway network, mainly on the mountainous lines. They terminated their working life cycle in the spring of 1980 at the Benevento rail depot. Several similar railcars have served in various Italian railways in private concession.

The Aln 556.2259, was delivered to the FS in November 1938, the year after she was exposed at the World's Fair in New York.  Aln 556.2331 can be seen at the Trieste Campo Marzio railway museum and Aln 556.2312 is visible at the Italian National Railway Museum in Pietrarsa (Napoli).
